Axa enters joint venture in Algiers

Two people shaking hands

Axa has signed two shareholders’ agreements in Algiers to set up two life and non-life insurance companies in partnership with the Banque Extérieure d’Algérie and the Fonds National d’Investissement (the Algerian National Investment Fund).

It is the first time the Algerian National Investment Fund has entered into a joint venture with a foreign investor.

Both investment projects are being implemented under new Algerian legislation for foreign investments which limits the share of foreign participation in the capital of local companies to 49%.

Axa was advised on the legislation, which is often considered over restrictive by foreign investors, by the Algiers office of law firm Gide Loyrette Nouel.

The signing ceremony took place on 31 May during the Franco-Algerian Investment Forum in the presence of Jean-Pierre Raffarin, special envoy of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Pierre Lellouche, French state secretary for foreign trade.
