Penny Black’s insurance week

One of the rumours that will not go away is that Giles, fresh from the largest deal in its history, has again got an appetite for deals, with Kerry London among the firms on its hit list.

Speaking to those in the know, it would appear the deal makes sense because - among other reasons - they share a number of locations, not least Isleworth in Middlesex, Watford and the City. However, one's sources have revealed that both parties are continuing to reassure the market that there is no truth in the rumour, and that the speculation is most likely simply down to the fact that Giles CEO Chris Giles and Kerry London chairman Joe Kelliher have horses stabled at the same place and are members of same club, making it no surprise that they have been seen talking together.

Penny was taking a stroll in Brighton last week when she was shocked to her very core by items on sale in a particular budget store. Battling her way through the crowds, snow and student riots, one particular item caught the eye, a meerkat, about 30cm high and fashioned in a faux-velvet jacket. It stared proudly out of the window, alongside 20 or so identical pals. As a recipient of one of the BGL Group-produced Harrods meerkats last Christmas, Penny couldn't help but notice the vague similarity between the cheap item on sale and her own furry friend. Harrods may well have a fight on its hands selling the £20 items these days. Whatever would BGL Group say? Someone call the brand police.

Penny was also a little disturbed to be asked to sign a disclaimer this week accepting that Allianz would not be liable for "any loss, damage, action, claims, costs or expenses, including without limitation any injury" arising out of an ice-skating event she has been invited to. Most disconcerting was the fact that said insurer has invited Penny to attend drinks beforehand!
