Post senior reporter Amy Ellis outlines this week's major general insurance stories which include online insurance broker Qmetric has been granted full Financial Services Authority approval and is said to be a “few weeks” away from adding three major insurers to the panel of its specialist consumer brand Policy Expert.

The company, which already employs 48 staff across two sites in London and Milton Keynes, plans to add Axa, Groupama and Ageas to its panel of providers for its online intermediary.

In other news: Sterling insurance has said it will not deduct policy excesses from riot claims and will reclaim the full costs from the police on behalf of policyholders; two long-standing senior figures from legal expenses provider ULR have left the company amid a major management shake-up at the Norwich firm. Chief executive Nigel Sayer, who joined the company in 1990 as a sales manager, has signalled his intent to pursue other interests, while commercial director Paul Cosh has been placed on gardening leave two months ago; the battle for broker dominance in South Wales is expected to be cranked up a notch following the news that rival firms Quick Quote and Motaquote are both looking to expand operations in the region; and Oval chief executive Phillip Hodson has insisted his coming presidency of the historic Cricket Club will not interfere with his running of the broker which is currently going through a restructuring process.
