October can be one of the worst months for hurricanes in the US. While Atlantic hurricanes tend to become tropical storms by the time they reach the Irish or British coasts, the increase in ocean temperatures means there may be more chance of hurricanes making their way to the UK, writes Jonathan Guard, Lexis Nexis Risk Solutions UK&I commercial director.

It was only in August that two Atlantic storms hit the UK. Storm Ellen brought winds as strong as a category one hurricane and record breaking wind speeds were registered in Wales and the Midlands
