Penny Black's Insurance Week

Hi-tech romance

Penny is not usually interested in stories on new technology, but when entwined with tales of romance her ears prick up.

On meeting Thatcham director of research Andrew Miller last week, Penny was treated to a low down on the latest developments in the motor industry, including the advent of a self-driving car.

However, she grew decidedly more interested when Miller told of his restoration efforts at his west London home which he shares with his wife - none other than LV head of financial crime Sue Jones. Penny always suspected love and insurance made good bedfellows.

Meanwhile, although insurance and pornography are not often mentioned in the same breath, the two industries share some common ground in the eyes of the law, as Penny learnt this week.

Speaking at the ABI's fraud conference, Ian Dyson, assistant commissioner of the City of London Police, explained how his vice division experience has been useful at the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department.

Whereas porn was seen as an easy target for criminals when it was perceived as an ‘unpoliced' area of the black market, changing the perception that insurance fraud is a similarly soft touch will help tackle the issue.

Maybe both will benefit from a hardcore crackdown.
