Throwback Thursday: CII salary survey and NFU Mutual’s splash
Insurance Post’s new Throwback Thursday feature steps back in time to January 1985 to remind you what was going on this week in insurance history when the Chartered Insurance Institute shared how much Fellows earn.
3 January 1985: CII survey of Fellows’ salaries
The Chartered Insurance Institute’s first survey of salaries since 1973 shows that taking all occupational categories into account Fellows earn on average £9060 to begin with and peak out at £18,950 in the age 61 to 65 bracket.
The survey also showed 127 of the 3958 CII members who completed the survey were earning more than £40,000 a year – equivalent to £121,091 a year today, according to the Bank of England’s inflation calculator.
NFU Mutual going swimmingly
Olympic swimming gold medallist Duncan Goodhew opened the NFU Mutual & Avon Insurance Group’s indoor swimming pool, one of the features of the new head office.
The pool also formed part of an advanced heat recovery system, which stored and recycled heat through the building, which Post reported was “one of the most modern office complexes in Europe”.
The water was warmed by heat drawn from the computer’s suites cooling system, which Post remarked proved “you can mix business with pleasure”.
